The Art and Emotion of Equine Experience: With the horse and on the canvas

Welcome to River Mountain Farm – Keezletown, Virginia

HORSEMANSHIP

Horsemanship and connection like you’ve not experienced before. We work with real problems and real questions, relating to the horse in the lightest possible way for truly effective results—from learning to ride to rethinking your approach to training, riding, competing, and lightness.

FINE ART

Art that inspires you, it invites connection and reflection. My work blends horses, movement, and thought—exploring themes of self-discovery, relationship, and presence. Each piece is created to inspire a deeper awareness of yourself, others, and the world around you.

RETREATS/CLINICS

Retreats designed to help you slow down, reconnect, and deepen your relationship with both yourself and the horse. We explore horsemanship through posture, alignment, subtle communication, and thoughtful discussion of different equine philosophies. With space for rest, artistic expression, and optional Reiki sessions alongside the horses, this experience offers a meaningful reset—leaving you with greater clarity, feel, and connection.

At the heart of River Mountain Farm is Connection, Restoration, and Reconciliation — the foundation for self-emergence in both humans and horses. Our work is fueled by gratitude, mindfulness, and the desire to create relationships built on joy rather than force.

We strive to cultivate horses who connect through trust and partnership, and humans who learn to listen, feel, and respond with clarity and compassion.

We offer high quality education both for horse and rider based on the softest possible physical connection and the strongest possible emotional and energetic connection.

Our Vision

To inspire a generation of people and horses to pursue wholeness and self-actualization through authentic connection with themselves, others, and a Higher power.

“The conversation we have
with a horse is never just about
the horse— it is a reflection of the one
we are having within ourselves.”
(Janine Aberg)

We believe that growth is both an art and a practice. Whether through horsemanship, creative expression, movement, or reflection, we seek to cultivate lives marked by beauty, courage, awareness, and meaningful connection.

Our Mission

Our goal is to create beautiful harmony in all we do. Our horsemanship programs emphasize timing, feel, and balance, both at liberty and under saddle. By integrating positive horsemanship, mindfulness, and meditative practices, we help ground both horses and humans in an artistic and harmonious partnership.

We encourage connection and reconciliation in multiple ways:

  • Between people and horses
  • Between people and other people
  • Between people and their higher power
  • Between people and themselves

Our methods combine equine engagement, education, art, movement, interaction, and meditation to cultivate emotional awareness, confidence, and harmony.

At River Mountain Farm, horsemanship is more than riding — it is a path to personal growth, emotional regulation, and meaningful connection with the natural world.

Meet Janine Gemay Aberg

I have been riding horses for as long as I can remember—quite literally before I could walk. Horses have been my greatest teachers, shaping not only my horsemanship but my understanding of trust, communication, leadership, and authentic connection.

Over the past several decades, I have dedicated my life to the study of horses, art, movement, and human development. As an internationally collected artist, my work has found homes on every continent. I have collaborated with Philadelphia Mural Arts, exhibited work in association with the 2012 Olympic Games, and led large-scale community art projects and exhibitions designed to inspire connection and transformation.

My approach to horsemanship blends Natural Horsemanship, Classical Dressage principles, Working Equitation, liberty work, and relationship-based training. Influenced by masters such as Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, and Bent Branderup, I believe that true horsemanship is not about controlling a horse, but developing the awareness, presence, and understanding necessary to create genuine partnership.

At River Mountain Farm and Life Center, horses, art, movement, and personal growth come together. The lessons, retreats, workshops, and camps I offer are the culmination of a lifetime of learning and practice—drawing from professional horsemanship, fine art, fitness, conflict transformation, emotional regulation, contemplative practice, and education.

Whether through a horse, a painting, or a retreat experience, my work is guided by a simple purpose: helping people discover greater connection, confidence, authenticity, and joy. My passion is creating experiences that inspire both horse and human to become more fully alive.
